A coach once asked me:
"Whatever happened to good old-fashioned willpower?"
Does willpower alone work?
Is it the key to great mental performance?
Sometimes.
But too often, we think we can just wing it.
Mental strength takes more than grit.
You need emotional resilience and a commitment to real change.
It’s way harder to resist bad choices when you’re:
😴 Tired
😟 Anxious
🤒 Sick
😞 Lonely
The real problem?
We make meaning out of our failures.
We default to fixed mindsets. We convict ourselves:
"I just don’t have the willpower I need..."
And what follows?
Helplessness. Shame.
We often treat willpower like a battery—
As the day goes on, it drains.
That belief gives us permission to fail.
So… we do.
Worse than that—
If you stick to something? ✅ You’re morally strong.
If you don’t? ❌ You’re morally weak.
And once that mindset takes over, problem-solving stops.
We binge. Escape. Rage. Numb out.
Break the cycle with a simple 3-step checklist:
✔ Don’t judge—just notice
✔ Renew your commitment—start again
✔ Have a plan for setbacks
Here’s the twist:
People who think they have a lot of willpower often don’t plan for setbacks—because they assume they won’t have any.
Mental fitness is an everyday commitment.
