Unconditional Compassion: What Damar Hamlin's Story Teaches Us

March 28, 20251 min read

Nobody asked because nobody cared.

A couple of years ago, Damar Hamlin literally had a heart attack on the field. Nobody asked about his politics, religion, or how many social media followers he had. His 40-yard dash time, stats, wingspan—none of it mattered to most of us.

Nobody asked if he deserved love, compassion, or care. Nobody said he had to earn it. He just got it—freely. Without knowing any details, I gave to his toy drive.

Everybody wanted him to be okay. A few years later, he’s playing a regular role for the Bills. It’s amazing.

We put too many conditions on our own value and others. Or we take it away too easily. We don’t think we—or others—deserve good things unless certain conditions are met.

It’s an internal battle for all humans.

Don’t wait for something life-threatening to happen. Give yourself the same compassion the sports world gave Damar Hamlin.

Prayers. Thoughts. Positive vibes. Compassion. Love.

Connect with yourself. Connect with others. You’ll be surprised by the power of humanizing yourself and those around you.

Let me help you change the conversation to mental fitness with a keynote, training, a coaching session, or one of our books.
