The Rise of a Performance Nerd

April 24, 20261 min read

Fernando Mendoza is the number one pick in the NFL Draft. He went from nobody special to a household name in one year. An overnight sensation, right?

Not really.

It wasn’t an accident.

In response to being labeled a nerd, he said:

“If being a nerd is always learning and always searching for new information, then I'm all about it—whether it's in the classroom or on the football field.”

That’s mental fitness.

Listen to this quote from his OC at Cal:

“We would practice back-shoulder throws daily at Cal. I showed thousands of clips, because that’s really what you do in the NFL. He started studying it, practicing it. And if he didn’t like the throw, he would work and work and work and work and work until he became so great at it.”

He’s not worried about the world failing him, and he’s not interested in failing himself. He’s also shown the courage to talk openly about his faith and his values.
