Safety.
We all need it.
But lately? It feels threatened.
🦠 The pandemic
🔫 Mass shootings
🔥 Climate change
✈️ Fights on airplanes
🏒 NHL playoff brawls
🎤 Constant political conflict
The irony?
We’re fighting about how to create safety.
And in doing so, we’re making things worse.
Mental toughness myths do the same.
They threaten psychological safety.
A book changed my view:
📖 The Illusion of Money – Kyle Cease
He argues that we think we need money, status, and power to feel safe.
But real security?
It comes from believing you can handle whatever happens.
I saw it firsthand.
I worked with an athlete struggling with self-talk.
Her belief?
“It’s not safe to make mistakes.”
Her reframe?
“I feel safe enough in the world to fail.”
Powerful shift.
So—how do we create safety?
1️⃣ Believe you can protect yourself.
💪 Recover from pain, loss, and failure.
2️⃣ Take risks—knowing you can handle the outcome.
🚦 Like when you drive.
You assume you’re safe because you trust your skills.
(Or at least the driver’s.)
Safety comes from trusting yourself.
Let’s change the conversation to mental fitness.
