There's Crying in Baseball (and That's Okay)

June 20, 20251 min read

In the movie A League of Their Own, the line “There’s no crying in baseball” became famous.

Turns out? That’s wrong.

Crying happens.
In big games.
Championship games.
For both winners
and losers.

Last week, I told a client who's experiencing significant loss—
Crying is an underrated coping skill.

Hear me out.

None of us like to cry.
It makes us feel weak.
It makes us feel vulnerable.

But sometimes, grief and loss can only be expressed through tears.

I’ve seen it over and over again in my career.
And I’ve experienced it too.

I’ve told myself: “I don’t need to cry.”

Here’s the thing:
Sometimes we just won’t.
Or don’t.
Or can’t.
Even though we know we need to.

Eventually things pile up.
The dam breaks.
And we give ourselves permission to let it flow.

Then we channel Elsa from Frozen—and let it go.

Sometimes, that’s all we can do
—to comfort ourselves,
—and to comfort those who are hurting.

I don’t need to share the science for you to know:
There’s
nothing better than a good cry.

Let it flow.
Let it go.
That’s mental fitness.

Let’s change the conversation.
