Have Butterfingers: The Mental Fitness of Letting Go

April 25, 20251 min read

Do you have butterfingers?

Don’t worry—I won’t smear you. Or bar you from anything.
I’ll actually pat you on the back.

Why?
Because we all stick with thoughts and feelings we won’t let go of.

Why do we hold on, even when it doesn’t help—or even hurts?

Recently, I was talking with athletes about letting go.
One said—
"I just can’t."

Got me thinking...

Here’s what I’ve learned:

🧠 1. Your brain is wired to hold on.
Your amygdala does this to keep you safe.

🚦 2. Safety & danger exist on a continuum.
And fear hangs out in the middle.

❓ 3. To let go, ask yourself two key questions.
✔ Is it safe to let this go? → List all the reasons it is.
✔ Is it dangerous to let it go? → List all the reasons it isn’t.

Asking these questions brings clarity.

📝 If I let it go, ___ will happen.
📝 If I let it go, my coach, parents, or teammates will think ___.
📝 If I let it go, it means I am ___.

Bottom line? Have butterfingers. Let go.

Melt the stigma. Spread the word. Change the conversation.
