Mental Fitness Fridays

Be a Goldfish

August 02, 20241 min read

This is Mental Fitness Fridays.

In Ted Lasso, Ted tells his players to be like a goldfish because they are the happiest creature in the world. This is because they have a ten-second memory. The fish can teach us a lot.

The unexpected happens in competition. Mistakes, missed shots, getting called out by a coach. These moments stick. Holding onto it can mess with you. That’s why it’s smart to be like a goldfish—forget quickly and move on. Goldfish “scale” things, they don’t overreact.

The past doesn't determine your now. Caring more about the next play does. You don’t need to ignore what happened; but don’t “flounder” over what’s already been done. We can influence the future by self forgiving, learning from failure, being comfortable with the uncomfortable. It’s like having a “license to gill” when it comes maintaining confidence.

When you have those skills and use them after the game is over you don’t have to worry about becoming arrogant and reckless. Cause you have the processes in place that allow for you to grow and get better.

Change the conversation to mental fitness. I’d love to do a keynote for your organization to help instill this goldfish mentality and boost your team’s performance. Trust me, it’ll be a “reel” game-changer!
