Ambiguous Loss

March 07, 20241 min read

Let’s talk about everything that comes with the season being over.

Hope gone.

Championship promises dead.

Sadness.

We wont see each other as much.

First step

Understand and accept that what you are feeling is normal, not a reflection of worth or that you care too much.

No matter how it went, endings create feelings.

Ambiguous loss.

A loss with no funeral - just a banquet that’s long.

Thats why ambiguous loss is tricky.  There’s no cultural ritual.

My dad wont be at the state tournament.  Even though he's missed it before, it's different now that he's really gone.  State tournament Thursday was our day. It’s an ambiguous loss.

One year a guy asked my dad who he wanted to win it all.  He said, Duluth East.  They haven't won won it since Spehar-  wait - you are Spehar!  I laughed so hard.  He didn’t know.

Loss,  ambiguous or not, sucks. Remembering the laughs, meaningful moments shuts off the vacuum.  Grief is the price of love. Love is why we play, coach, parent.

We will miss you dad and your pile of newspapers at the X.

Love, relationships, connection are the core of mental fitness. Build special ones with your people. It makes for a lived life.

Share us on social. Together, we will change the conversation to mental fitness.
