My ABC's
Apr 27, 2023
I only know 25 letters of the alphabet. I don't know Y.
This is Mental Fitness Fridays and I am Hans Skulstad.
Why did I lead with this joke? Last week we talked leading with an example. I am going to experiment to create a leading with an example.
Believe it or not, I can predict your next thought. Now I know my ________.
My ABC's next time won’t you sing with me. Admit it. That's where your head went.
The alphabet can be done in about 10 seconds, except pirates don't finish that quickly. They get stuck at C. I wondered how fast I could read the alphabet backward and how long it would take me to learn to do it in 10 seconds.
Backwards took 50 seconds, even though it's the exact same letters. Here’s my experiment. I am going to see how long it takes to get down to 10 seconds. I'll document what I find and what strategies work best. I am not going to cram. It's not a mentally fit approach.
Hebb's principle says that neurons that fire together wire together. That's why I could predict your next thought. It's what will allow me to recite it faster.
I was telling an athlete about this, and she asked what the fifth and 26th letters of the alphabet were. Ten seconds doesn't feel E-Z. My first effort is on my YouTube channel. I'll record my progress each day. I see two challenges: learning it to do it faster and a test of commitment and habit formation. Let's see how long it takes and what I learn. Next week I'll have another example to lead with.
