What’s the difference between a bad joke and a dad joke?

Welcome to Mental Fitness Fridays. I'm Hans Skulstad.  

June is Pride Month for the LBGTQ community. I realized I have not recognized this before.  

I was nervous about it. I didn't want to say anything that was offensive to people in that community. I also know some people think not talking about it will make it go away.   

After baptisms, He would declare you are God's kid with an ink stamp that said GOD's. 

The difference in a dad and bad joke are small. Same with LBGTQ community. They are different. Many live their life differently — some the same.  

My dad did a sermon to address the topic. It was short. He handed out two books: one with all the verses where Jesus says to love others. It was a huge stack of pages. The other was a single one-sided page that had a few lines that said things about homosexuality being wrong or bad. For some, that went over just fine. Others seemed mad and left. 

There's been backlash for supporting Pride Month. If you stop following me because I do, that's OK. I do hard things. Not sharing support would be easy.  

I know from athletes who have come out to me before their family or anyone else, I have little at risk. Friends who are gay have shared the same. Coming out and sharing it with people you love who are "against it" would suck. By the way, being against it won't change anything.    

I'm glad these athletes could and sensed I wouldn't judge them. If this makes it easy for the next athlete who needs to, then great. I know why — they felt better and played better. They didn’t know it, but that's probably one of the reasons they needed help

There is a great Ted Talk by Shane Wickes who played football at Boise State and coaches high school football. He explains why it’s important to treat those who identify as LBGTQ as God’s kids. 

Mental fitness is about living according to your values. I'm glad I did today.
