Relieving the tension

Jan 11, 2024

Welcome to Mental Fitness Fridays.

We live in a world with a lot of tension. We all feel it.

It makes it hard to feel okay sometimes. It affects how you feel and seeps into you daily.

There's often a tension for athletes, coaches, and teams between mental health and mental toughness.

So, how do you relieve it? You can roll it out, but it's not quite the same way you would with a foam roller.

How?

Change your lens.

Mental toughness is concerned with compliance and bearing your emotions. It values the now, not the later.

Mental health is more concerned with self-awareness, understanding what's going on inside, and making choices that promote mental health. It values the now and the later.

The tension exists because results mean playing time and winning. It also exists because we don't see how they can go together.

Composure, poise, awareness is the middle.

Here are my questions for you:

  • What's your system for developing composure, poise, and awareness?
  • What was modeled?
  • What was taught?
  • What works for you?
  • What doesn't?
  • Why do you do what you do?
  • Is it geared toward compliance or commitment?

Guess what? It's possible to blend them, but it starts with believing it can be done. Keep watching to see more ways you can relieve the tension between mental toughness and mental health and create mental fitness.
