Dogs and Trees

What do dogs and trees have in common? Bark.

Welcome to Mental Fitness Fridays. I'm Hans Skulstad.

Both barks are designed to provide safety. The tree is protected by its bark, and a dog uses its bark to communicate — sometimes to create fear.

Sometimes athletes get put in the doghouse by a coach. No amount of barking can protect you from it or get you out.

I made an appearance on the Sports Life Blog on Kare11.com with my friend Dana Theide. The discussion is focused on youth athletes and what they can do to get out of the doghouse, and it includes advice for coaches when working with youth athletes. Sometimes it’s hard to get out of it if you don't know what your coach is thinking.
