Believing in Yourself

Nov 30, 2023

Why did Santa Claus go to therapy?  He didn't believe in himself.  LOL.  This is Mental Fitness Fridays.  I'm Hans.

Believing in you sometimes feels easy and hard.  Why isn't it easy all the time? Because it's not.  Well, we confuse what we feel with belief.  Now, I believe I can get almost any home improvement project done because I can probably figure it out, but not always fast or cheap or safe.  Sometimes, we confuse self-belief with arrogance, and that can be dangerous, but most of the time, it's not.  But when it comes to projects with natural gas (not farts) or large amounts of electricity, shocking, I'm out. The risks involved in learning are just far too great. But that doesn't mean I don't believe in myself.

Too often we see trust as an all-or-nothing concept.  But it's actually scaled. (Which is a heavy topic)  Belief comes from faith.  Building it means taking steps that lead to growth.  The most successful performers see the difference between fear and danger. They can see it quickly and then devote the energy needed to meet the challenge.

We all make mistakes. And often we are tempted to see those reasons to drop all belief in ourselves, but they're not.  There have been situations that I chose to internally react to as just that. In retrospect,  in time and when the emotion left I realized I got hooked by someone else's problem and someone else's fear. I realized I can trust myself to make a positive impact on the people around me.

Recently I challenged a high school coach to list 100 reasons he could trust himself and 100 reasons he was a good person. He found the exercise challenging.  Yep, it was for me too.  Try it. Have it handy for those times when others try to slay you with their own fear and lack of belief.  You'll be glad you did.
