In the documentary Court of Gold, Kevin Durant says that when you’re a superstar, there is no accountability unless you have it for yourself.
That’s mental fitness.
When you’re a superstar, it’s easy to believe you have no flaws. Hard moments force a confrontation with failure. They expose flaws in your game.
His quote matters.
We often think we need to be held accountable by others. It doesn’t come from others. We decide to be accountable. Accountability comes from within.
Durant gets it. He’s a future Hall of Famer, an Olympic gold medalist, the all time leading scorer in Olympic basketball, a two time NBA champion, and an MVP. That’s not an accident.
We often think accountability is about willpower. That’s part of it. But it’s really about knowing your values and living in congruence with them.
In one episode, he says he loves playing with the young guys because he gets to learn how they prepare and what they’re about. A future Hall of Famer learning from players who are not as accomplished as he is.
That’s accountability. That’s mental fitness.
